What does it mean to be unlawful in New Zealand?

You must hold a valid visa to remain in New Zealand. If your visa expires while you are still in the country, you become unlawful and are liable for deportation.

A person who is unlawful generally cannot make an ordinary visa application from within New Zealand or continue working or studying lawfully. However, the options that may need to be considered depend on the person’s dates, documents, previous immigration history and current circumstances.
